Regan
Regan is a teenage girl dealing with the issues of adolescence, while keeping her brother Liam's true identity a secret. She has to balance Luna's secret with going to school, her love interest Chris, chemistry class, babysitting, and discovering her own identity. Although she is uneasy about Liam transitioning, she is nonetheless supportive. She often sacrifices her own needs for her brother.

Liam/Luna
Liam has always felt that he is a girl inside of a boy's body; he is transgender. Liam calls himself Luna, like the moon, because he is a girl that can only come out at night. He cannot be Luna during the day because his parent’s, friends, and society are not fully accepting of the way he is. Liam is only happy when he is Luna, so he decides that he is going to make a permanent transition. He leaves behind his family and friends to embark on the quest to become his true self.

Alyson
Alyson has been Liam’s best friend since they were little kids. She feels confused, frightened, and betrayed when Liam tells her he is transgender. She freaks out and does not talk to him for a short period of time. On Liam’s birthday, Alyson eventually comes around and shows up at Liam’s house. They play video games like they used to, and she explains that it is going to take a time to get used to, but she accepts Luna for who she is.

Mrs. O'Neill

There is an unspoken truth between Liam and his mother; when he was little, she caught him dressing up in her make up and clothes, and she gave him a tapestry bag for his fourteenth birthday. Although she knows that Liam is transgender, she doesn’t speak about it because she does not know how to cope with it. When Regan explains to her mother that Liam is transitioning, Mrs. O’Neill says, “Not now, I can’t deal with this.” She figures that if she ignores the situation it will go away.

Mr. O'Neill
Mr. O’Neill wants Regan to do chores and cook dinner like their mother, and he wants Liam to play baseball and fulfill the gender expectations of a typical son. He refuses to acknowledge the signs that Liam is different. When Luna emerges to the family, she says, “This is who I am.” Mr. O’Neill replies “Not in my house…not if I can help it.” He refuses to accept and understand Luna for who she is.
